Writer, born in Prague. He became a Zionist and emigrated to Palestine in 1939. Although he is known in the English-speaking world as the long-time friend, editor, and biographer of Franz Kafka, he was a versatile and prolific writer in his own right. His works include the historical novel Tycho Brahes Weg zu Gott (1916, trans The Redemption of Tycho Brahe) and a novel about Jesus Christ, Der Meister (1951, The Master).
